How Food Allergy And Intolerance Develop

Food allergy and intolerance are related conditions which cause an adverse reaction within the physical body whenever it comes into contact with certain food items. These conditions are becoming increasingly common across all sections of the population, but the numbers of young people with allergies is especially disturbing. Some allergies are so serious that even the slightest exposure to the problem substance puts the body at risk of death. If the allergies occur early in life, there is a significant chance that the body will develop a tolerance for the substance and that the condition will subside.

The most common types of allergies are those to protein foods, and the reason for this is simple. It is the immune system in the body which reacts to substances it considers to be a threat. Proteins can be misunderstood and believed to be toxins, and the immune system will then do everything it can to eliminate that substance from the body. There is no difference between plant and animal proteins, as they all have a similar effect.

Food intolerance is similar in nature, but it is the digestive system which cannot break down a certain type of food. The most common condition is an intolerance of lactose, the sugar which is found in milk. This intolerance can easily be dealt with by switching to other protein foods which do not contain lactose. The simple fact is that the milk of cows and goats evolved as food for those specific species, and that human infants are better being naturally fed by the mother. In cases where this does not happen, there is a far greater risk of allergies developing in later years.

Long standing food allergies can be more difficult to treat. There is no substitute for simply not allowing the offending substance into the body, but if this does happen there are ways to reduce the severity of the reaction. One common way of doing this is to give the body extra adrenaline. This is the hormone which is produced during the natural fight or flight mechanism which humans use for survival. This hormone will increase the blood flow and make it easier for the body to eliminate the substance it is allergic to.

Food allergy and intolerance can be extremely dangerous, if the body's reaction to the substance it deems to be a threat is extreme. Sometimes, the reaction will be enough to actually threaten the life of the patient. This happens when the breathing is affected. When the body simply does not tolerate a food, the reaction is rarely this extreme. The patient can live a fairly normal life as long as they avoid the substance they have the intolerance for. Modern food processing allows for the manufacture of virtually any food without one certain ingredient which is known to be a frequent cause of reactions.

Treating a food allergy can be virtually impossible, as there is nothing which will make the body fail to react whenever the trigger substance is taken into the body. The best that can be done is to live a careful life taking great heed of food labeling. This is easier to do when you are constantly eating in your own home, as the food you buy will all be clearly labeled. It is when you eat outside that the problems can occur. Not every food establishment realizes the importance of informing the customers of which other types of food are prepared on their surfaces.

It is difficult to assess why the problem of food intolerance should have escalated so greatly in recent years. What is certain is that there are more people of all ages who have a certain type of food they cannot tolerate than there has ever been before. Research is being carried out in the hope of identifying exactly what it is that makes a body's immune system reject a food item, but as of now no-one can be sure. Until such a breakthrough can be made, allergies are more likely to be managed than actually cured. The exception to this could come from alternative medicine, which treats the body as a whole rather than just the symptom.

One of the most difficult parts of dealing with food allergy and intolerance is making an accurate diagnosis in the first place. The only way to be sure is to slowly eliminate different foods from the diet in turn, noticing the change in reaction. Even this can be difficult at times, as some reaction can last for a longer time than others. A blood test can give helpful clues, but it is only this method of elimination which can provide a definitive answer. You need an accurate diagnosis to be able to manage food allergy and intolerance.
