The Search For A Food Allergy Cure Goes On
Food allergy cure and medical treatments are greatly desired by many people whose immune systems are playing a trick on them, but they are sadly few and far between. Food allergies can only be managed, by avoiding the substance which causes the difficulty in the first place. If any of this substance is taken into the body by mistake, the body can be assisted in its attempts to remove it by the use of hormones. These hormones are the same ones which are produced by the body's fight or flight mechanism.
In order to find a cure for food allergies, science will need to finally establish what causes them in the first place. We know how the bodily mechanism creates the allergic reaction, but not why the immune system should decide that a harmless protein represents such a threat to the body's survival. Until this is determined, there is little hope that these conditions can be deliberately cured. Understanding how the immune system reacts to proteins is obviously a useful start.
The human immune system is absolutely critical to the survival of the species, as every child has more than enough infections to kill it off if it was not for this system of protection. When the body is invaded by a foreign body, the immune system is triggered into action. The foreign bodies are surrounded and disabled, and the substance is then excreted from the body. Where the problem is more extreme, such as when poison is taken in to the body, a more violent reaction occurs. Hormones which are used in the body's fight or flight mechanism are used to increase the blood flow.
It is these hormones which provide the nearest thing we have to cure at the moment, as they allow the body to expel the allergen more quickly than would otherwise be the case. Adrenaline is the most commonly used hormone, as it is naturally occurring and represents no threat in its own right. The only risk is that which is always inherent in any treatment which involves increasing the flow of the bloodstream. Hormone treatments will always increase the chances of a nut allergy sufferer surviving a serious attack.
The fight for a food allergy cure is made all the more urgent by the severe reactions which can occur in some allergy cases. This is especially true with nut allergies, which can be fatal. The biggest danger come in the early days of a sufferer's life, when they are not even aware that they have the condition, and when their parents are unaware also. It is not uncommon to leave a child alone with its formula or early food, as parents just do not think that their child is suddenly going to start gasping for breath and being in fear. Even if the child is not alone there is every chance that the supervision may be limited.
The problem is that even if a cure was developed for this type of extremely serious allergy, it would not have the chance it needs to save lives. The first attack a sufferer endures can be enough to kill them, and when this happens the cure will not be available as no-one will know that the problem was about to occur. For the extreme food allergies, the only solution will be a comprehensive screening system applied to every child at an extremely young age. If this screening system could detect an allergy before it was ever triggered, it would definitely save lives.
A cure for food allergies which do not provoke such an extreme reaction remains a serious possibility. Even something which would help the person suffering the allergy to cope with the symptoms would help greatly. Where the symptoms are exposed and easily accessible, such as with hives and eczema on the skin, there is always the possibility of treating the symptom directly. This will only provide temporary relief, but it may well allow the sufferer to get through a normal working day when they would otherwise not have done. An actual cure is a more ambitious project, but there are those who believe it is perfectly feasible through a vaccine.
The search for an effective food allergy cure will go on, and there are those who believe it may not be that far away. The greatest hope seems to be in the possibility of a vaccine. It has even been suggested that a vaccine could completely cure food allergies within ten years. Medical predictions of this type tend to be on the optimistic side, especially if they are being made by the people developing the treatments. Whatever the future turns out to be like, there is more hope than before that we can finally find a comprehensive food allergy cure.
